Ptuj
We had a difficult journey from Bohinj to Ptuj yesterday. There was torrential rain which made motorway driving hazardous. The speed limit is 130 kmh in places and many drivers were driving at that speed in terrible visibility some with no rear lights which are mandatory here at all times. As we went east the temperature dropped to 1 degree and there was a lot of snow mixed with the rain.
We reached Ptuj in the early afternoon and found our hotel which is in a pedestrian district. We had been instructed to park in front of a cinema and walk to the hotel. By the time we got there we were soaked as the rain was still bucketing down.
Our room is comfortable if somewhat eccentrically furnished. There is a turntable with a selection of vinyl records but no fridge or kettle. Luckily there is a little kitchen down the corridor where we can make tea. We had difficulty finding anywhere to eat last night but ended up in a deserted restaurant where we had some passable pasta. The Slovenian cuisine has a predeliction for sausages and broth but that didn't appeal after a hard day on the motorway.
Today we explored Ptuj which is Slovenia's oldest city. It is charming and very low key. The main attraction is the castle which we spent quite some time exploring.
